An Incubation Method for Estimating the Carbon Content of Phytoplankton in Natural Samples

چکیده

In this method, the phytoplankton standing stock as carbon was calculated from carbon assimilation rates, measured at 24 and 48 hr, during incubation of seawater samples on shipboard. The method requires exponential growth at constant specific growth rate of the phytoplankton in the sample during incubation and relies on the fact that the rate of synthesis of cell substance is proportional to the quantity of cell substance present. Growth was so extensive that nutrients had to be added to the samples before the 48-hr incubations to maintain exponential growth. Light intensity during incubation affected results, and matching the incubation intensity to that in situ seemed best. Carbon : chlorophyll cc ratios found in phytoplankton off La Jolla, California, averaged about 90 in nutrient-deplctcd surface layers and about 30 in deeper, nutrient-rich water. Photosynthetic rates per unit chlorophyll a, calculated from 24-hr incubations, were high due to chlorophyll a synthesis during incubation.

Modelling the effect of vertical mixing on bottle incubations for determining in situ phytoplankton dynamics. II. Primary production

The estimation of in situ phytoplankton primary production is pivotal to many questions in biological oceanography and marine ecology both in a local and global context. Applications range from earth system modelling, the characterisation of aquatic ecosystem dynamics, or the local management of water quality. A common approach for estimating in situ primary production is to incubate natural ph...

Measuring the cation exchange capacity (CEC) as one of the most important chemical soil properties is very time consuming and costly. Pedotransfer functions (PTFs) provide an alternative to direct measurement by estimating CEC. The objective of this study was to develop PTFs for predicting CEC of Guilan province soils using artificial neural network (ANN) and multiple-linear regression method a...

Pedotransfer functions for estimating soil moisture content using fractal parameters in Ardabil province

Extended abstract 1- Introduction Soil moisture curve is an important characteristic of soil and its measurement is necessary for determining soil available water content for plant, evapotranspiration and irrigation planning. Direct measurements of soil moisture coefficients are time-consuming and costly. But it is possible to estimate these characteristics from readily available soil propert...

Models for estimating phytoplankton population densities under different environmental conditions with emphasis on climatic factors

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of environmental conditions with emphasis on the main meteorological factors (air temperature variables, sunshine hour, and humidity), on phytoplankton communities. As important primary producers in aquatic ecosystems, phytoplankton communities could be affected by several factors. Environmental factors play the major role in occurrence and diver...
